The truth, however ugly in itself, is always curious and beautiful to the seeker

The murder of Roger Ackroyd is a detective fiction published in 1926 from the Queen of Crime Agatha Christie the book was one the international best sellers. The story revolves around Dr. Sheppard who lives in a beautiful village known as King’s Abott with his dear sister caroline who is the gossip queen of the village which causes a lot of annoyance to the most famous doctor of king’s abott that is his brother. Trouble and mystery finds the way to king’s Abott when a rich widow Mrs. Ferrars commits suicide. When Mrs. Ferrars fiancé Mr. Ackroyd gets to know about this he discovers that Mrs. Ferrars was driven into suicide by some extortionist Then the grief stricken lover decides that no matter what he will find the culprit but he himself is mysteriously murdered shortly afterwards because he knew too much to live. Luckily for King’s Abbot, the Sheppards’s new neighbour turns out to be the world famous detective Hercule Poirot who gives up his retirement in order to find the murderer of Roger Ackroyd. One thing is for sure: When Hercule Poirot starts searching for the truth, he will stop at nothing and no one is free from suspicion.
The novel is comprised of a small number of characters. There are the usual host of characters you would expect in an Agatha Christie tale, the rich society folks, the servants with secrets to hide and the middle class in supporting roles. The characters are pen down in such a manner that almost every character has some secrets to hide which make this novel a literary work filled with mystery.
The book is written in a manner that it provokes the spy inside you to come out and try to solve the mystery in close coordination with Hercule Poirot.
The book will keep you on the edge the entire time every new chapter comes with a new mystery. There is small circle of suspects, derived from the setting and time of the murder, and a line of clues. The reader is provided with all the necessary information and it is up to them and Hercule Poirot to piece it together and figure out who the murderer is. In The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Christie does this in an unparalleled fashion.

The kite runner published in 2003 is a debut novel of author Khalid Hosseini. The story revolves around a boy named Amir who lives in Afghanistan and is continuously trying to cope with his evocative childhood experiences. Amir who is raised by his Baba a man of great status in his city is raised with his servant’s son hasan who is more than a servant to him and belongs to minor hazara community of Afghanistan and is ready to do anything for his agha and never leaves him alone, on the other hand Amir betrays him once because of his cowardice when he leaves hasan in the hands of some bullies who rape him, the incident shakes up hasan and snatches away from him his ceaseless smile. Amir after the incident cannot stand the very presence of hassan as his cowardice keeps flashing before his eyes and let hassan and his father leave the house. Amir is always haunted by his childhood feelings, his fears do not leave him even in California where he and his father flee after a war breaks out in kabul. Amir finds the love of his life there and some years down the line becomes an established author but a perfect family and success doesn’t release him from his childhood sins. Atonement sets in when he returns to kabul on a mission. The story is a strong one which doesn’t fail to tickle your emotions, there are many instances of violence, rape, reference to rape and even offensive language which wasn’t very much necessary. The story is based on the experiences of the narrator and protagonist Amir and his childhood memories of Kebabs, the narrow streets of kabul, story telling under the pomegranate tree and their beloved kite flying festival around which their story revolves, the story is a heart breaking one with capabilities of making you cry.
The charm and beauty of the book lies in the way the characterisation is done. Almost all the characters are beautifully written expect some which seem redundant. Initially you will hate the character of Amir the protagonist because of some sins of him but eventually when he tries to undo them his character starts making sense. The character of Hasan was of a loyal person, sometimes he was so loyal that it became hard to believe that people of this type do exist, may a times it felt a bit unrealistic. He was such a lovely person even when he was being wronged by his best friend his father Ali too was written on the same concept. If there were such people living, the world would have been a different place to live in
Being an amazing writer Khaled hosseini is able to convey his idea through this book with vivid imagery and a good story telling techniques. the character sketch is given so beautifully that you start making an image of the person in your mind. The writing style though very easy to understand eventually become very much extensive that you feel to get bored and fails to keep you on the edge. After 25% of the story the sudden transition of the story to their escaping in a truck becomes really confusing and doesn’t make sense till many pages. All in all the writing style is good the book would have been a better one if their were less details of unnecessary events.
The story doesn’t fail to entertain you. The book is an interesting one which involves lots of emotions and forces you to read it till the end, though the story loses it grip many a times in between but eventually comes back on track.

Looking for Alaska published in 2005 is the debut novel of the well known author JOHN GREEN. The story revolves around a boy named Miles Halter who is an asocial teenager and is so bored of his life that he wants to seek a great perhaps, and in the search of this perhaps he decided to join culver creek boarding school the same boarding school which his father attended and was one of the most rebellious kids the school ever saw. He joins the school to start anew to make new friends to give his life a purpose. When he reaches school he immediately become friends with His room mate chip (popularly known as colonel), a guy named Takumi and their best Friend Alaska young who is a rebel, a girl who is sublime, mysterious, moody, savage someone with whom miles falls irrevocably in love with but later finds out she has a boyfriend named Jake. Some months down the line Alaska also develops some feelings towards miles but before things could take shape some horrible incident happens which leaves miles in a tormenting state. The book is divided between two parts i.e. before & after. The before comprises mundane and monotonous happenings, kids going to classes, playing pranks, drinking, smoking and stuff. Initially the difference doesn’t make sense but then the breaking point and a calamitous incident takes place which makes things clear.
There aren’t many characters in the book but those mentioned are beautifully written by John green. The complex nature of Alaska will initially be really confusing but when things start settling her character becomes clear. All in all the characterisation is done quite beautifully.
We all know how john green writes and how he has established his name in the industry after writing some of the best novels. The story and the plot is so simply amazing the writing style is quite easy even the beginners will also be able to comprehend it. The author was properly able to convey his ideas.
The story is so entertaining that they even got an online show made on it. The book involves a lot of emotions and won’t leave you unsatisfied.
